Introduction

I was a U.S. Marine in Kandahar, Afghanistan 10 years ago at this same time. I was a sergeant with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit that was deployed immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The 15th and 26th Marine Expeditionary Units were in Afghanistan from November 2001 to February 2002, and made up a major part of the Coalition’s initial assault force.

It is hard for me to believe that Coalition Forces are still there today, a never-ending war that no one is winning. Like the war that has waged for over 10 years now, the camera equipment I used is also 10 years old now. A Nikon D1 2.7 megapixel DSLR camera created all of these photos, it will be apparent in the over-sized prints. It will add timeliness to a subject that has become timeless over the past decade.  I hope you find aesthetic and documentary value.

I hope you find beauty in the photos but overall I hope you find an awareness of the ongoing situation in Afghanistan.

10년 전 이맘때, 나는 아프간 탈레반의 거점이었고 격전지였던 칸다하르에 주둔했던 미국 해병대였다. 나는 해병 26사단의 중사로 2001년 9/11 사태 직후 중앙아시아로 파견되었다. 2001년 11월부터 2002년 2월까지 해병 15사단과 26사단은 아프가니스탄의 초반 주요 공격을 담당하는 부대였다. 하지만 나는 미군이 아직까지 아프가니스탄에 남아있다는 것을 믿을 수가 없다. 승자가 없는 끝없는 전쟁이 계속되고 있다. 10년 묵은 전쟁처럼 열 살이 넘은 270만 화소의 내 니콘 D1 카메라가 그때 그 곳에서 내가 바라 본 모든 장면을 담았다. 당시만해도 270만 화소는 놀라운 것이었지만 지금은 다만 이미지가 거대한 사이즈로 선명하게 출력되길 바랄 뿐이다. 나는 내가 담고 다시 선택한 대상과 주제들이 끝없이 이어지는 것 같은 10년의 세월을 넘어 분명하고 확실한 어떤 것을 전달하기를 희망한다.  관객 여러분은 이번 전시를 통해 사진의 미적인 부분과 기록적인 면을 동시에 발견하고, 내가 아프가니스탄에서 보고 아름답다고 느낀 것들. 10년이 지난 지금 다시 꺼내 선택한 내 사진 속에서 함께 느끼기를 바란다. 그리고 다만 지금도 계속되고 있는 아프가니스탄의 상항을 되짚으며 전쟁이라는 것에 대해 다시 한번 생각해 보길 희망한다.
